African Union (AU)

In 2002 in Durban South Africa, the African Union was founded/launched as a continental union comprising 55 member countries. It replaced the Organization of African Unity (OAU) which run from 1963-1999.

The objectives of the AU as enshrined in the AU charter include

  1. Elimination of all forms and remnants of colonialism and apartheid
  2. Promotion of unity and solidarity among member states
  3. Coordination and intensification of cooperation and development agenda
  4. Safeguard sovereignty of member states and encourage international cooperation

The Vision of the AU is “an integrated Prosperous and Peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens and representing a dynamic force in the global arena.”

Agenda 2063 is a strategic framework document developed by the AU to help achieve its objectives and vision of ‘inclusive and sustainable development.’ The 2063 master plan is a 50-year implementation schedule beginning 2013 with 10-year implementation of identified 15 ‘flagship programs such as the establishment of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA); establishment of a single African air-transport market (SAATM); cyber security among others.
