In 2002 in Durban South Africa, the African Union was founded/launched as a continental union comprising 55 member countries. It replaced the Organization of African Unity (OAU) which run from 1963-1999.
The objectives of the AU as enshrined in the AU charter include
- Elimination of all forms and remnants of colonialism and apartheid
- Promotion of unity and solidarity among member states
- Coordination and intensification of cooperation and development agenda
- Safeguard sovereignty of member states and encourage international cooperation
The Vision of the AU is “an integrated Prosperous and Peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens and representing a dynamic force in the global arena.”
Agenda 2063 is a strategic framework document developed by the AU to help achieve its objectives and vision of ‘inclusive and sustainable development.’ The 2063 master plan is a 50-year implementation schedule beginning 2013 with 10-year implementation of identified 15 ‘flagship programs such as the establishment of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA); establishment of a single African air-transport market (SAATM); cyber security among others.
